Yuan Dao Study Society is an association of priests and the laity accredited to the Catholic Diocese of Hong Kong, and is also a non-profit-making charitable organization registered in Hong Kong.
Our work includes communication and reception of both domestic and overseas academics, and the promotion of Catholic studies. We aim at fostering the exchange of knowledge and ideas in relation to these studies through meetings, seminars and translation, editorial and publishing work.
“Yuan Dao” are words from the chapter Yuandao (〈原道篇〉) which is found in the Literary Mind and the Carving of Dragons (《文心雕龍》). Gao Yau’s annotation of the first chapter of the book Huai-nan zi, Yuandao (《淮南子 · 原道訓》) says: “Yuan” is the origin. It is the source and the truth. It covers the universe and successively experiences all things. Thus is named as the original Source.
The citations here are aiming at encouraging academics from the mainland and overseas to delve into the origin and the truth, the very heart of the universe and sentiment of all things; to seek achievements at writings, thus benefit the world. Yuandao says also, “Now with the emergence of mind, language is created, and when language is created, writing appears. This is natural.” “He (Confucius) expresses in literary form the light of the universe, and opens the ears and eyes of all the people.” “From these things we know that Dao is handed down in writing through sages, and that sages make Dao manifest in their writings.”
