Description

Abstract: Christian Theology has appeared as a cultural phenomenon in China since the late 1980’s. This emerging cultural vision has a special influence on shaping contemporary Chinese culture. During 20 years of ups and downs in its development, it has gradually developed into a Chinese Christian Theology, recently known as academic theology, which has attracted the attention of the Christian Church’s academic institutes in China. The nature and traditions of Christian Theology are a kind of spiritual guide to lead people to put it into practice in life. Hence, Chinese Christian theology should not be just an academic topic. This calls for an inevitable and necessary dialogue between academic theology and church theology for the future development of Sino-Christian Theology. The question about how to proceed with a dialogue leading to the realization of putting theory into practice is always a challenge to those concerned about the development of Christian theology in China.

In view of this, a famous French philosopher, Hadot, and his thoughts on philosophy as a way of life, may have some insights to offer. This paper, therefore, will examine the future development of the design of Sino-Christian Theology in China based on the thought of Hadot.

Abstract: The question of relations between reason and belief, and philosophy and theology, is a primary and fundamental one for Medieval scholastic philosophy being confronted with. Conforming to the demand of the epoch, Aquinas opposes both the extreme intellectualism and the extreme fideism, puts forward and sets forth a new philosophical view, which is full of initiative spirit and accord with historical trend. The central content of the view consists in that neither is philosophy the master of Christian theology, nor the maidservant, but the housewife.

Aquinas demonstrates and elucidates his philosophical view with two main weapons: one is his theory of two kinds of truth, another is his theory of two disciplines. He points out that there are two kinds of truth, namely the truth of reason (veritas rationis) and the truth of faith (veritas fidei), also two disciplines, namely philosophical science (philosophicas disciplinas) and sacred doctrine (sacra doctrina). He not only emphasizes and demonstrates the relative independentability of philosophy, but also philosophical functions in religions and theolories, and puts out a new idea of the theology which is part of philosophy (illa theologia quae pars philosophiae) , so as to open theodicy, a frontier of Christian philosophy.

Aquinas’ philosophical view has been condemned as the alienation of Christian doctrines, but it works out the decriminalization of scholastic philosophy successfully, and guarantees its dominant position in various kinds of medieval Christian philosophical thoughts, and offers a kind of theoretical mode and thinking way for Christian philosophy’s following development.

Abstract: In the history of Western thought, the thought of Pseudo-Dionysius the Areopagite, in the fifth and sixth century, is a turning point of the mysticism between past and future. He had inherited the mystical experience of Moses and Paul in Bible and the Spiritual Exercise of the Neoplatonism and the Alexandria School. Then he had inspired the mystical theology of Saint Thomas d’Aquin, Meister Eckhart, St. John of the Cross and others. However, definitely, the “Mystical Theology” is not the third way after the “Positive Theology” and “Negative Theology”, on the contrary, it is a concept of holistic theology.

Abstract: The human person cannot naturally grasp the mystery of God; however, the Divine Grace may make all of us capable of attaining to a true knowledge of Him. The cognitive structure of this knowledge is the ‘Chalcedon paradigm’: the simultaneous interdependence of unity-distinction-ordering between the elements of divine mysteries. St Thomas Aquinas OP (1225-1274) applied this paradigm to theological research; and his ‘sapiential realism’ inspired the missionary work of Matteo Ricci SJ (1552-1610).

Abstract: This paper focuses on affective factors within moral judgment in the philosophy of Thomas Aquinas and Confucius. Aquinas’ idea of “connatural knowledge” gives us an insight into how affective elements influence our moral judgment. At the same time, Confucius in his “theory of benevolence” also emphasizes the role of love, and in The Analects we see clearly an illustration of how human emotions work upon their moral judgment.

This paper will first discuss the ethics of Aquinas, his idea of connaturality and its relation to affective factors in morality, and then it will probe into this affectivity working within moral practices in the philosophy of Confucius. Finally, similarities and differences, illustrated by a comparison between the two, will help us to further reflect upon the issue in question.

Abstract: Is faith a private matter, which can only be attributed to being someone’s personal preference, or is it public, something that can be communicated in public language to the public?

For David Tracy, theology by nature is public, and this is true even for systematic theology, which apparently is mostly internal. Different from fundamental theology, systematic theology does not appeal to our common experience. It is also different from practical theology which aims at transformation. Systematic theology by nature is oriented to the Church and for the Church. Be that as it may, a theologian is still living in the world, and is affected by the contemporary problematic. He is thus inevitably starting from the tradition of the Church to a reinterpretation of that tradition for a contemporary situation. Thus insofar as he is not willing to reduce his faith to a decoration in a private garden, he is obliged to render it public by means of presenting some criteria of truth.

Abstract: Chinese people have a strong sense of utopia. From the very beginning, they have been searching for a heaven on earth where they can achieve personal joy and happiness. This paper attempts to point out, one of the keys for a heaven on earth is the harmonious relationship of mutual love among people. Although each person has an innate ability to love, not everyone actualizes this ability, and puts it into practice. This article tries to indicate clearly that every person needs the fundamental belief, “God is love”, in order to implement his/her potential to love.

Abstract: The Catholic has changed her attitude toward Marxism the Second Vatican Council, which opened a dialogue prelude between the Catholic and Marxist. During 50 years although it hasn’t made direct great progress, the change has had a profound influence on the development tendency of the Marxist’ view of religion and how the Catholic Church cope with the modernization. There are much concordance between the two from their theory and documents and the development of each other. There are much dialogue space between them in history contradictions such as on idealism or materialism, theism or atheism, and class struggles and anti-violence. The cooperate practice in history between the Catholic and the Marxist provide teaching lessons for them to overcome the contradictions. These forebode the possibility of harmonious coexistence of Catholicism and Marxism in China, which is significant for the Catholic and Marxist to promote formal dialogue in practice with each other and serve for the development of human society together.
