Description

Abstract: This text explores the relations between evangelisation, culture and inculturation, especially the importance of epistemology in the local culture in the process of inculturation of the Christian faith. As we know, the process of evangelisation is actually the inculturation and contextualisation of the faith; as a matter of fact, the process of inculturation uses local cultural resources and focuses on the people of the local culture, thus establishing within the local culture the basis for the development of an “inculturation” process. In such a process, it is inevitable that the traditional cognitive models of the people affects the construction and character of the inculturated theology. In this paper, we try to explore the possible influence of Chinese traditional epistemology on future Chinese theology.

Abstract: Gregorian chant is a form of traditional liturgical music of the Roman Catholic Church, and its collection is the result of centuries of accumulated work. It was introduced to China when the missionaries came to evangelise in the East. The use of Gregorian chant in liturgical services presented practical problems, in particular the foreign musical style and language barrier. This article analyses examples of adaptations of Gregorian chant used in liturgical services and how they were used in different historical periods. The different strategies with which missionaries instructed the Catholic faithful reflect the diverse approaches to inculturation. Examples that will be discussed include:

  1. Chant books published in Latin with Chinese transliteration;
  2. Syllabic chants translated into Chinese texts with original melodies;
  3. Gregorian chants adapted into classical Chinese texts by Fr. Vincent Lebbe (1877-1940);
  4. Zhuri Songzan (《主日頌讚》, literally translated as Sunday Hymnal), a chant book compiled by Fr. Peter Ma (馬海聲, 1919-1998) after the Second Vatican Council, in which the Latin texts were translated into modern Chinese so that the faithful could chant in their vernacular language.

Abstract: Aquinas’ idea of the human person is founded upon his metaphysical thought of actus essendi. A human person is a subsistent being with rational nature. Due to its esse, a human person is subsistent; his rational soul is in turn a separate substance in its own right. A subsistent substance is the principle of its activities. Freedom is part of man’s nature. Thus subsistence, autonomy and liberty are the properties of the human person. Thus Aquinas’ idea of the human person highlights its proper value and dignity.

12世紀羅馬教宗首席權論爭問題探析 – 以1136年安瑟莫與尼基塔斯的對話為核心

Abstract: There were several religious dialogues between the Roman Catholic Church and the Greek Church after the schism of 1054. Besides the controversies on theology and liturgy, the toughest obstacle is the concept and understanding of the primacy of the Roman papacy. The dialogue between Anselm of Havelberg and Niceties of Nicomedia in 1136 offered a significant source for us to understand their contemporaries’ understanding, defence and rejection of the idea. Through an examination of Anselm’s Anticimenon, we can evaluate his contemporaries’ perception of the primacy of the Roman pope from the perspective of several opposing pairs: single authority versus local custom, “the Principle of Apostolicity” versus “the Principle of Accommodation”, the ecumenical council versus secular authorities. Through this, we will reveal the understanding of the source of Roman primacy, as well as the operation and limitation offered by the Eastern and Western Churches in the twelfth century. As the Church launched reforms in Western Europe from the middle of the eleventh century, her understanding of the primacy of the Roman pontiff and papal authority were fundamentally different from that of the Eastern Church. The divergence on the perception of papal authority is the essential reason for the schism between the Easter and Western Churches, which is still not resolved nowadays.

天主教財務經濟支出研究:以「靈性支出」為核心的考察

Abstract: The “spending” of Catholic financial resources refers to the various kinds of expenses in the development of the Catholic Church. The most important part is “spiritual expenditure” which contributes directly to the development of evangelisation. In this paper, through the examination of the expenses on church building and maintenance, catechism schools, seminaries and salary of catechists, the author analyses the characteristics of financial and economic expenditure in the Catholic Church of China.

Economy is not only the bottleneck for the development of religion; it is also the driving force behind. In the study of “spiritual expenditure” in the Roman Catholic Church, we can see that the amount of missionary funds is usually in direct proportion to the development of religion. It is often reflected in the sustained growth of the number of Christians, which is exactly the purpose and fruit of the Catholic Church’s expenditure and investment.

Abstract: Wang Zheng was a Confucian in the late Ming dynasty who lived in Jingyang, Shaanxi Province. He was first a Buddhist, then a Taoist, and finally he was converted to and baptised into Catholicism. The Christian faith was a choice, a decision based on the integration of Confucianism and Catholicism. Wang Zheng had his own exploration in the integration of Confucianism and Catholicism. He wrote many works, such as Ultimate Discussion of the Awe of Heaven and the Care of Human Beings (《畏天愛人論》), Benevolence Association (《仁會約》), Mr. Augustin Tudeschini Travelled through the Ocean to the East(《杜奧定先生東來渡海苦蹟》)and The Diary of Chongyi Tang (《崇一堂日記隨筆》). In addition, he also wrote The Draft of Praying for the Elimination of Sins (《祈請解罪啟稿》)and Living Apart and Autobiography(《析箸文簿自敘瑣言》)etc. This article describes Wang Zheng’s faith experience and introduces briefly four of his works on Catholicism. In order to explore accurately and gain a macroscopic view of the motivation and merits of Wang Zheng’s faith, the author will continue studying the characteristics of his faith more deeply.
